The scenery was stupendous! That kind of turning and banking while following the terrain is something we just don’t get in the Midwest. After that, we visited the Alford Desert, a dry lakebed approximately 12 by 50 miles in size. We chose somewhere in the middle to set down, doing the equivalent of a glassy water landing since there weren’t any features other than a shadow to indicate height above ground. I made my longest wheel landing ever because, well; I could go for miles without running out of runway. After that it was off to the Fields Station for a hearty breakfast. For convenience, we followed local custom and landed on the highway and taxied to parking. A quick go-around handled the one southbound pickup that materialized behind me while on final.
